Where What Comes Next Starts to Take Shape
Who I helpI work with widowed women who’ve moved past the hardest days and are asking a bigger question: what now?
You're not looking for more sympathy — you're looking for purpose, direction, and a community leader who sees your potential to lead life, not just your loss.
If you're ready to turn your experience into mentorship, advocacy, or leadership of your own, you're in the right place.
Hi, I'm CarolynI’m a widow advocate, mentor, author, speaker, and a widow, personally, for over 25 years
On Valentine's Day, 2000, my husband Chad was killed by a hit-and-run driver. I was 37, with two young daughters, and no idea how to keep going — let alone how to lead anyone anywhere.
What I found in the months and years that followed wasn't a lack of sympathy. It was a lack of anything after the sympathy. No roadmap for who I was supposed to become. No community was built for women who didn't just want to survive widowhood, but wanted to grow through it — and eventually, to lead because of it.
So I started building what I couldn't find.
In 2006, I told my story on national television, and Oprah Winfrey looked at me and asked what I was going to do with it. That question sat with me for five years.
In 2011, the answer became Modern Widows Club® — The Movement for Widow Care® — started in my own living room with a handful of women who understood exactly what I meant when I said the hardest part wasn't the loss. It was not knowing who to become next.
15 years later, that living room has grown into a global movement. I've spent that time doing more than surviving — raising my daughters, running a business, and building the frameworks, research, and community I wish someone had handed me on day one. I'm 26 years into this journey now, and I can tell you honestly: I have walked every stage of Hope, Heal, Grow, and Lead myself, more than once.
If you're standing where I once stood — unsure what comes after the worst has already happened — I'm not here to tell you it gets easy. I'm here to tell you it can lead somewhere. I'm proof, and I'd be honored to help you find your own way there.

How I Can Help
You don't have to build this next chapter alone, and you don't have to figure it out from scratch — I've already built the path. Through PIVOT, my 6-month virtual mentoring program at Modern Widows Club®, I walk beside you as you move from where you are now into leadership, mentorship, and purpose.
If you're not ready for that yet, you can start with the Modern Widows Club Substack app, called Widow Life®, the Healthy Widow Healthy Woman podcast, or step into the wider community through Modern Widows Club® itself.
And if you're further along and looking to bring this message to your own organization or audience, I'm also available to speak, and my books are there to walk with you chapter by chapter, whenever you need them.
Wherever you're starting from, there's a next step here built for you.
Get to
know me
Before Modern Widows Club, what did you do?
I ran my own interior design business — which explains why I still can't walk into a room without mentally rearranging the furniture and I always choose beautiful spaces for events.
Coffee or tea?
Coffee in the morning, herbal cinnamon tea at night.
Introvert or extrovert?
Full ENFJ. I light up around people, and I've never met a stranger I didn't want to hear the story of.
Any pets?
A rescue cat who runs the household and knows it. He’s our MWC mascot often intervening in ZOOM calls.
What’s always on your calendar?
Travel, whenever I can sneak it in. New places have a way of reminding me that the world is still wide open.
Favorite part of your week?
Watching another widow decide she's ready to lead her life or to lead with others. It never gets old.
